April 15, 2019 – Long Beach, California – Will Owen finished 7th – his best result of the 2019 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in the DPi class with Juncos Racing at the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach.
Owen took to the 1.968 mile, 11-Turn street course with teammate Kyle Kaiser. Kaiser was responsible for qualifying duties and placed the No. 50 Juncos Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R in the 9th spot on the grid.
California native, Kaiser had a clean start and managed to stay out of trouble through the first yellow flag. When the second yellow came out, the crew of Juncos Racing decided to go from their original two stop strategy down to one stop. Kaiser was told to stay out during the yellow, moving him up to first place.
Kaiser went on to lead 14 laps and was able to create a nice gap before handing over the No. 50 to Owen who was released from the pits on cold tires just in front of the race leaders. Staying in front of the leaders as not to lose the lead lap was crucial, and Owen succeeded while even pulling away.
Another yellow flag came out, unraveling Juncos Racing’s strategy, but Owen carried on in 7th and captured the teams best finish of the in the No. 50 Juncos Racing Cadillac DPi-V.R.
Racing will continue on May 5 for the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio.
Will Owen – Driver
“We made a lot of improvement and came a long way this weekend. We made some gains as a team and executed the program really well. We had great pit stops and great pace. We still have a lot to learn and improve on, but we were able to get through this weekend without any major issues and lead some laps. We made a gamble on our strategy that would have paid off with one more yellow to come at a certain time and would have put us in first. Even though we didn’t get the yellow, we were still able to finish seventh. Overall I feel great with the direction we are heading in and look forward to getting back on track in a few weeks at Mid-Ohio.”
