September 23, 2019 – Stavelot, Belgium – Will Owen finished 9th after a hard-fought 4 Hours of Spa – the penultimate round of the European Le Mans Series with United Autosports in the LMP2 category.
The weekend began with Owen and the United Autosports crew focusing on the set-up of their new ORECA chassis. Alex Brundle ended up qualifying the United Autosports No. 32 ORECA 07 LMP2 in 7th. Owen started the 4 Hours of Spa and made his way up to 5th place before his first pit stop. Owen continued improving upon his pace and was running in 3rd by the time he handed the car over to teammate Ryan Cullen.
Cullen also had a strong run and held his own amongst the top of the field before letting Brundle bring the race home. Unfortunately, the door latch broke and caused the door to open, which sent Brundle back to the pits with just over an hour to go. The repair caused a considerable hit on time, and the team had to settle with a 9th place finish.
The final round of the 2019 European Le Mans Series, the 4 Hours of Portimao, will take place on October 27th in Portugal.
Will Owen – Driver
“It’s been a while since I’ve been in a car with top pace, so it was refreshing to have a good opening stint today. United Autosports has done a top job with the Oreca, and we had one of the fastest cars on the track, and it was a lot of fun to drive. Ryan and Alex also did a good job. We had to do an extra pit stop unfortunately which ruined our race as I think we had the pace to be up there with the #22. Congrats to them. We are excited for the next one now we know we have an excellent pace.”
