May 13, 2019 – Monza, Italy – Will Owen finished 3rd place with United Autosports in the LMP2 class of the Europeans Le Mans Series during the 4 Hours of Monza while also posting the second fastest lap of the race.
Owen joined United Autosports for the second round of the Europeans Le Mans Series in between races for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend in Monza Italy. The event marked his first race in the ELMS this year with intentions of running the rest of the season in parallel with his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship responsibilities.
The No. 32 United Autosports Ligier JS P217 was driven by Owen, Ryan Cullen, and Alex Brundle. Brundle qualified the crew in 9th place for the start for the 4-hour event. Cullen took over to start the race and made his way up two positions by lap 5. Cullen was up to 6th place after his first pit stop and made it up to 4th by the time he completed his triple stint and handed the No. 32 over to Owen. By the end of his second stint, Owen had moved up to 2nd place and posted the second fastest lap of the race.
Brundle took over with his focus on defending their position but was passed and crossed the finish line in 3rd. The performance granted Owen and United Autosports their best results at Monza in three years of racing the event.
Next up for Owen is back to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Presented by Lear from May 31 – June 1, 2019.
Will Owen – Driver
“The race was a lot of fun. I joined in P3, but in reality, it was P2 when Ryan got out of the car. The Ligier was great, and it was balanced really how we wanted it. I pushed really hard, and we seemed to have a really similar pace to the leaders but really I have to say a huge thanks to United for, first of all, the opportunity to be back here because it’s been a lot of fun and I’m so happy to be back with a team that is on another level with everything they do. I really have to thank the crew on my car too. It’s nice to work with Ryan and Alex as well. Alex closed the race out in a solid third which is a great result. I think we really maximized the car as well as we could have so let’s keep going.”
